Cycling in the South of Mallorca

Majorca by bike is one of the greatest pleasures you can enjoy all year round, whether to access remote coves, to go shopping or simply to have an ice cream with the family. In short, cycling around Mallorca is an experience you can not miss on your holidays.

Cycling is not only a means of transport, but also a way of exercising. There are many studies that relate an increase in happiness in city residents when changing the car for the bicycle.

In our Hotel Colonial, every year more and more tourists come to do cycle touring in the south of Mallorca: Campos, Salines and Colonia de Sant Jordi. Therefore, we felt that a post on our blog was necessary to help visitors find out more about the island of Mallorca by bike.

Enjoying Mallorca by bike is an experience that will remain forever, whether you are an amateur or a professional.

As many of you already know, at the Hotel we love to recommend routes in the surrounding area and offer you our special services for cyclists: rental, towing, garage, technical assistance... Now we have also created this small guide to Mallorca by bike so that you can consult it at any time: places where you can rent a bike anywhere on the island, some routes of interest near our beloved Hotel and the most famous events that take place on the island of Mallorca for cycle tourists.

Cycle touring in Mallorca

Mallorca is one of the leading destinations for cycle tourism thanks to reasons such as the climate, the landscape, the wide variety of routes and the excellent flight connections with many places in Europe. All this makes it very tempting to take a short break to Mallorca for cycle touring.

Tourists who decide to cycle around Mallorca are either professional or amateur cyclists. Many of them bring their bicycles from their country of origin to Mallorca by plane or specialised transport companies. But there are also a large number of visitors who prefer to rent their bicycles in Mallorca.

According to the Balearic Tourism Department and the Balearic Cycling Federation, more than 70,000 tourists arrive each year with an organised cycle tourism trip.

The large number of cyclists in Mallorca has made it necessary to increase the supply of bicycles on the island. This has allowed professional bicycle rental at a very affordable price so that cyclists do not have to depend on transporting them by air.

Below we recommend some places where you can rent a bike in Mallorca, either for cycle touring or simply for a ride on the beach or in the mountains.

Mallorca by bike: Sa colonia de Sant Jordi, routes

Mallorca is a paradise for cycling tourism. As we have mentioned before, people from all over the world come here to cycle on Mallorca's roads.

The geographical location of Colonia de Sant Jordi, unlike other places on the island, has the advantage of not requiring excellent physical conditions, as most of the routes are not very steep, so if you come with the family, you have the chance to do easy routes and enjoy the surrounding nature.

On the other hand, if you want to do more difficult routes, the Puig de Cura, Sant Salvador and the Ermita de Bonany are located 40 km away from the hotel, and they have nothing to envy to the Puig de la Sierra de Tramuntana.

Here we would like to introduce some routes that you can do in the area of our Hotel Colonial. Most of the routes depart from the Colonia de Sant Jordi and are circular. These guides will give you an idea of what you can see and experience around Sa Colonia on two pedals.

We have chosen different types of routes that cover all levels and types of bicycles. From low-impact routes to those for more experienced cyclists that will leave no one indifferent.

Colònia de Sant Jordi – Ses Covetes ( Es Trenc)

Distancia: 11,82 km
Vertical drop: 30 m
Difficulty level: easy

Type of route:

We depart from the port of Colonia de Sant Jordi (or from the Hotel Colonial) and head towards the baths of Sant Joan, where we will find the first signposting of the route. This is a very well signposted route which also details the number assigned to each of the windmills in particular. On our way back, we will enjoy the views over the Campos countryside and the Es Trenc salt flats. Most of the route follows secondary paths, which makes it very pleasant and fun.

Colònia de Sant Jordi to Ses Covetes

Colònia de Sant Jordi – Campos (Route of the windmills)

Distance: 38,54 km
Vertical drop: 30 m
Difficulty level: easy

Type of route: We depart from the port of Colonia de Sant Jordi (or from the Hotel Colonial) and head towards the baths of Sant Joan, where we will find the first signposting of the route. This is a very well signposted route which also details the number assigned to each of the windmills in particular. On our way back, we will enjoy the views over the Campos countryside and the Es Trenc salt flats. Most of the route follows secondary paths, which makes it very pleasant and fun.

Colònia de Sant Jordi to Campos

Colònia de Sant Jordi – Santanyí (Santanyi charms and Cala Mondragó natural park)

Distance: 41,83 km
Vertical drop: 30 m
Difficulty level: easy
Type of route: One way

This route will take us along roads and paths without much traffic and we will pass through the village of Ses Salines.  Then we will head towards Santanyí, one of the most beautiful villages to be found in this part of Mallorca. Finally, the route will take us to the Mondragón natural park to enjoy its natural charm and, depending on the season, take a dip in its turquoise waters. As there are no steep slopes, this route can be done by anyone, and can be completed within a short period of time, stopping at the different roadside bars and viewpoints.

Colònia de Sant Jordi to Campos

Colònia de Sant Jordi – Cap Salines Lighthouse.

Distance: 10,41 km
Vertical drop: 1 m
Difficulty level: intermediate

Type of route: One way

We have classified the third route as intermediate level, because sometimes we will have to carry the bike or pedal over sand or rocky areas. Therefore, we do not recommend it for people who are not in good physical shape. This route follows the seafront and you will see unspoilt beaches such as Es Carbó, Es Caragol and Cala En Tugores, which are only accessible by bike or on foot. You will see crystal clear waters all along the way, as well as the vegetation of the area and some dune beaches. We recommend that you carry plenty of water and tools in case of a puncture, breakdown, etc.

Colònia de Sant Jordi to Faro Ses Salines

Colònia de Sant Jordi – Sa Torre – Cap Blanc

Distance: 83.12 km
Vertical drop: 312 m
Technical difficulty: Difícil
Maximum height: 312 m
Type of route: Loop

We have considered the route to be difficult due to its duration - approximately a full day's walk. It is a route that covers approximately 50 km outward and 50 km return, leaving from Colonia de Sant Jordi and reaching the Ermita de Bonany, a 17th century sanctuary at the top of the mountain. During the route we will travel along roads in good condition and pass through villages such as Felanitx, Campos and Petra. To do this route it is recommended to be an experienced cyclist, to have a good bike, spare parts and tools.

Colònia to Sa Torre and Cap Blanc

Colònia de Sant Jordi – Son Sant Salvador

Distance: 80.29 km
Vertical drop: 659 m
Technical difficulty: Muy difícil
Maximum height: 630 m
Type of route: Loop

We have classified this penultimate route as very difficult, just like the previous route. Along this route we will be able to see villages such as Porreres, Campos, Felanitx and Cas Concos. The aim of this route is to go up and down the mountain of Son Sant Salvador, one of the most emblematic mountains in the south of Mallorca. This route of approximately 40 km outward and 40 km return, is perfect for an Autumn or Spring day, as its long duration puts the cyclist at risk if it is done during the summer season.

Son Salvador route

Colònia de Sant Jordi – Villafranca de Bonany – Hermitage Bonany – Colonia

Distance: 106,95 km
Vertical drop: 545 m
Technical difficulty: Muy difícil
Maximum height: 283 m
Type of route: Loop

The fourth and last route is considered to be difficult due to its length - approximately a full day's ride. During the route we will follow good roads and pass through villages such as Felanitx, Campos and Petra.
